Work: African Caucasian Indian, African American Indian
Author: Felieke van der Leest
These two pieces are inspired by the human identity and an event in my life that happened many years ago: I travelled to the US for the first time and I had to fill out an official form. There was a question of my race: whether I was African American, Native American, Asian, Latin American etc. The question surprised me very much, even shocked a bit and also confused me. What was I ? White? European ? I had to ask the flight attendent because I saw nothing familiar on the list. She answered that I was Caucasian. I was stunned, never heard of this human race before.
In the present time in which more and more people travel and settle down in all parts of the world, the human bloodline mixes easily. Some people fight against this and don’t want this happening because they think their blood is better than the blood of other people. I don’t understand it, but maybe I travel too much and meet too many wonderfull people of all different races (= skin colour?) to be able to think like that.
